Today we’d like to introduce you to Krista Everage.
Hi Krista , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I began my professional interior design career here in Los Angeles in 1986, arriving from Chicago with my professional design education and internships completed. I went to a comprehensive 5 year interior design/ architecture program at the College of Design, Architecture and Art that is part of the University of Cincinnati. My now-husband was completing his MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago at the same time, so I did a long internship there with a Michigan Avenue architecture and interiors firm. We then married in my home state of Pennsylvania and moved to Los Angeles, which at that time was undergoing a design renaissance. Shortly after arriving and having the opportunity to design a custom art- centric residence for a prominent LA family, we established Everage Design. Over these many years we have had the privilege of imagining and creating unique and personal homes for clients wanting relaxed luxury, combining beauty and function with indoor/ outdoor flow.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Overall, we have been extremely fortunate to collaborate with exhuberant and unique home owners, as well as colleagues in the architecture and building professions. Also Los Angeles has many artisans that we collaborate with to create highly crafted furnishings, providing a personal experience for our clients. We have many workshops that fabricate the various aspects of our furnishings. We call our furnishings line Everage Design Workshop. Of course this process of building luxury homes and furnishings has many moving parts, so we continually stay engaged with all details and various aspects to get the extraordinary results we envision. One plus that has been developing is all of the high quality textiles and furnishings that can be used indoors or out, bringing function, clean- ability with cozy beautiful living. Light colored textiles in bleach-able fibers are great for families with young children and pets, especially those wanting a light / bright palette ! Currently the devastation of Palisades Fire is presenting new challenges for clients who have lost homes or have badly smoked-damaged homes. There’s new territory to navigate there, with our goal to bring comfortable and beautiful environments to them as quickly as possible.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We have dubbed our design style as “California Romantic” as we believe in living in a relaxed but elegant style that encourages and supports indoor/ outdoor flow with comfort at every turn.We love exploring all the various design styles Californians enjoy: the many styles that evolved in the 1920’s including European inspired revival styles as well as modern movements. We view ourselves as expert curators with an artistic, poetic hand to create a unique design vocabulary that mixes the clients’ dreams and aspirations with the architectural style and natural environment of the home. We have worked with many living architects and landscape designers that are so talented, as well as restoring and furnishing many important homes by iconic Architects including Paul Williams, Gerard Colcord, and Wallace Neff. It’s thrilling, and allows us to use our creativity and expertise in endless ways, offering design services to a wide array of clients.
Because of our extensive art and design backgrounds, we are as enthusiastic about sublime neutral and textural palettes as we are layered and richly hued palettes. I would say that is one of the most unique aspects of our firm. We also understand the importance of nuanced and layered lighting, which makes all the difference in a home’s romantic and comfortable aesthetic. The acquisition and curation of fine art for the client’s home is also a major part of our focus. We once collected the art for a client as a beginning phase, rather than waiting until the end. This allowed the furniture and textiles to respond to the art with a very poetic conversation, and for the art to be enjoyed in the best possible environment .
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most is surrounding our clients with beauty and comfort! We want them to enjoy the design process, bringing out their artistic sides, so their home reflects their uniqueness, uplifts their lives, and enriches their everyday moments.
